We can love someone and just be happy about it even if we know that it cannot last forever. It is not about having someone. Meant to post this a couple of days ago but got caught up into some heavy loads of workzzz...

This is just an another style of updating/compiling the kernel. It's based on Ubuntu (btw, I've just received my free ubuntu cds today!) so basically, other debian-based distros could use the same steps. Why do we have to compile/update our kernel? Just simply to look more 'macho' and bring out the real man in us. So, here goes..

1st thing's 1st:

$su
#apt-get update

Then, the toolz

#apt-get install kernel-package libncurses5-dev fakeroot wget bzip2

After that, the KERNEL. Select your desired kernel version (for my example 2.6.18.1 which is in the
.bz2 format). Change to /usr/src and wget your kernel.

#cd /usr/src
#wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.18.1.tar.bz2

Unpack the package, create a symlink (optional for easy 'cd'ing)

#tar xjf linux-2.6.18.1.tar.bz2
#ln -s linux-2.6.18.1 linux
#cd /usr/src/linux

Now, if you have to patch your kernel with some err... patches, you do it like this : (make sure the patch is in the /usr/src/ dir)

#bzip2 -dc /usr/src/patch.bz2 | patch -p1 --dry-run
#bzip2 -dc /usr/src/patch.bz2 | patch -p1

ok, you don't have to run both of the above commands. the 1st one is just to test if everything will be ok. if it doesn't return any error, then you can proceed to the second command (without the --dry-run)

The first command is just a test, it does nothing to your sources. If it doesn't show errors, you can run the second command which actually applies the patch. Don't do it if the first command shows errors!

You can also apply kernel prepatches to your kernel sources. For example, if you need a feature that is available only in kernel 2.6.19-rc4, but the full sources haven't been released yet for this kernel. Instead, a patch-2.6.19-rc4.bz2 is available. You can apply that patch to the 2.6.18 kernel sources, but not to kernel 2.6.18.1 or 2.6.18.2, etc. This is explained on http://kernel.org/patchtypes/pre.html

Prepatches are the equivalent to alpha releases for Linux; they live in the testing directories in the archives. They should be applied using the patch(1) utility to the source code of the previous full release with a 3-part version number (for example, the 2.6.12-rc4 prepatch should be applied to the 2.6.11 kernel sources, not, for example, 2.6.11.10.)

So if you want to compile a 2.6.19-rc4 kernel, you must download the 2.6.18 kernel sources (http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.18.tar.bz2) in step 3 instead of kernel 2.6.18.1!

This is how you apply the 2.6.19-rc4 patch to kernel 2.6.18:

#cd /usr/src
#wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/patch-2.6.19-rc4.bz2
#cd /usr/src/linux
#bzip2 -dc /usr/src/patch-2.6.19-rc4.bz2 | patch -p1 --dry-run
#bzip2 -dc /usr/src/patch-2.6.19-rc4.bz2 | patch -p1

It's a good idea to use the configuration of your current working kernel as a basis for your new kernel. Therefore we copy the existing configuration to /usr/src/linux:

#cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config

Then we run

#make menuconfig

which brings up the kernel configuration menu. Go to Load an Alternate Configuration File and choose .config (which contains the configuration of your current working kernel) as the configuration file.

Then browse through the kernel configuration menu and make your choices. When you are finished and select Exit, answer the following question (Do you wish to save your new kernel configuration?) with 'Yes'.

This is the fun part - build your kernel:

#make-kpkg clean
#fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-dreamb0x kernel_image kernel_headers

After --append-to-version= you can write any string that helps you identify the kernel, but it must begin with a minus (-) and must not contain whitespace.

Now be patient, the kernel compilation can take some hours, depending on your kernel configuration and your processor speed.

After the successful kernel build, you can find two .deb packages in the /usr/src directory. After that, you can 'cd' to that dir and do your installation (#dpkg -i bla..bla..bla) of both the linux-image and the linux-headers. You can also transfer both the .deb packages to other computer.

Reboot your system and do a 'uname -r' to show the world how macho you are now with your new kernel freshly baked in your own room...

Aku ingat tadi nak pasang linux kat laptop Compaq Omnibook XE2 yg dah lama 'bermastautin' kat bilik aku ni. tak pasti lagi nak distro apa tapi kalau nak pasang aku rasa aku akan pilih antara Slackware ataupun Debian. fikir punya fikir, RAM dia dah 64MB jer pastu hdisk lagi 6gb lebih. herm....

Aku dah makin dirasuk oleh lagu Canon D (original oleh Johan Pachelbel). mcm2 variation yg dah jumpa tapi yg paling best gak aku dgr setakat ni oleh mamat George Winston. Sedap giler dia goreng lagu tu.

minggu lalu jer 2 bijik pendrive aku hangus. satu 128MB Kingston (dah 3 tahun aku jaga benda ni) satu lagi 1GB (tak tau apa jenama) - member aku punya. yg kingston tu aku cucuk kat front USB pc customer. mungkin connector ke mobo tu technician pasang terbalik. yg satu lagi ni aku pasang kat pc yg aku pasang sendiri (kat front usb gak). terus bau hangus... Aku baru jer update template blog ni. Smooth sikit. Dah tukar template lama yg "maskulin" dulu tu sebab takleh view dgn betul kat dlm browser 'musang berapi'.

Semalam tak gi mana2. Duduk rumah jer layan komputer aku. Install balik GRUB sebab aku dah format partition windows & sumbat balik XP. E-Lam call dekat pukul 12 dlm aku dekat nak blackout. Mula2 tak berapa cam suara dia sebab mcm org kena selesema. Dia pun tengah boring takda plan. Tak sempat aku nak tanya banyak2, line putus. Aku rasa kredit dia abis. Jauh tu nak call dari Kuching ke Tawau. Kesian dia...

Malas nak keluar lunch tadi sebab pukul 2 nanti dah nak balik. Lagi, matahari tu macam nak kupas jer kulit aku yg memang dah kurang isi ni. Hari makin panas, gula kat kedai makin kurang... Kawan aku yg kerja kat kedai bagitau yg org nak beli gula 1Kg pun kena pakai IC. Pergh!

Tak sabar nak balik rumah... nak makan!

Ari ni mood mandom semacam jak (walaupun hampir tiap masa mcm ni). Mungkin sebab cuaca panas (alasan pertama), atau mungkin sebab bosan (pun alasan jugak) ataupun memikirkan masalah yg memang dah lama terpikul atas bahu aku (ermm, ni mcm alasan kukuh...)

Kat tmpt kerja skrg ni. Customer takda, kerja/service takda. Duduk jer menghadap komputer ni dari pagi tadi. Tadi baca blog afdlin shauki (selambakodok). Kepala otak dia ni memang aku respek sangat sebab dia boleh fikir 'out of the box'. Buat album (FUYOO!! <- ni tajuk album dia la, bukan aku sorak 'fuyoo') pastu dia send free of charge. Dengar dulu, kalau korang minat baru bayar. Tu pun ikut suka ati nak bayar braper. Kalau korang rasa album tu layak dpt RM10 korang bagi la RM10. Kira cam Open Source Software pulak. Tapi tetap RESPECT kat dia ni!

Mcm mana la aku nak menghadap dunia kalau kepala aku asyik tertunduk-tunduk jer tiap masa. Member aku, Maman Kechik, pernah cakap - "Biar kita tunduk tapi jangan minta pijak. Kita tunduk menanduk!" Tu pun sorang lagi member best aku yg dah lose contact. Nasib baik tak lose contact lense... hehe...

Hidup aku poyo jer (walaupun ader yg tak setuju kalau aku cakap camni). Dah tiap ari mcm robot. Bangun pagi -> sarapan -> mandi -> gi kerja -> balik kerja -> minum petang (sambil tgk simpson) -> lepak dpn komp (kadang gi mandi) -> mkn malam -> tido. Esok pun camtu gak.

Opp, sorang customer masuk... punya slow dia bercakap, beli sebijik floppy drive. Tadi sorang awek dtg suruh cek usb hub dia yg takleh guna. Masa cucuk kat komp ni selamber pulak dia detect pastu blh baca thumbdrive. Huh, sah, komputer awek tu yg problem. Budak uitm tapi baju dia tadi ader tulis skola kuhara. Bekas budak sana ler tu. Lawa gak, puteh molek tapi body gempal sket la. Datang ngan mak dia siap speaking omputeh sket-sket lagi...

Biler la nak bagi gaji ni. Sepatutnya ari ni dah gaji...

Fuh... ingatkan blog aku ni dah berkubur! Kononnya takda masa la tu nak isi. Ceh, ceh, ceh... Dulu pun aku selalu cakap ngan member : "Cuma orang yang dah meninggal jer yang takda masa..." Bukan apa, banyak lagi kena fikir. Kerja satu, org minta tolong buat assignment satu, bersantai lagi satu, tengok tv pun satu lagi. Nah, banyak tu!

Sekarang ni tengah menunggu untuk gi mandi. Awal lagi ni, baru pukul 7:51 pg. Masuk kerja ari ni pukul 9. Tiap hari kerja. Sabtu pun full day, minggu kerja 1/2 hari. Sabtu pertama ngan ketiga balik pukul 3. Nak gi gunting rambut pun aku tak sempat. Apo da...

Semalam dapat hard disk dari Uncle Boy. Boleh gak aku ganti hard disk 2.1 Gb aku yg tengah nazak ni. Kesian dia, berkhidmat hingga ke bunyi platter yang terakhir. Tapi masa aku buat HD Regenerator takda pulak jumpa bad sector. Sihat walafiat walaupun mengeluarkan bunyi-bunyi yang aneh. Tak jumpa awek lagi tapi member komputer aku makin banyak kumpul. Aku nak menuntut lagi banyak-banyak sebelum berjuang sendiri...

Dah tengok Initial-D. Wah, best! Aksi best, storyline best (walaupun kadang ader gak glitch yg kecik dlm jalan cerita tu) Anne Suzuki pun best. Comel siut... Cuma Jay Chou aku tengok tak berapa boleh bawa watak Takumi Fujiwara tu. Ok ler, cuma kaku sket. Edison Chen tu ok, cool jer. Nak tunggu CD yang blank hantar ni. Initial-D anime 1st stage.

hujan jer satu hari... memaksa aku jadi pemalas! tadi buat assignment kak diana. baru siap satu unit. ader la dlm 3-4 unit lagi nak siapkan dlm 2 minggu ni. pastu ader lagi authorware tu. mati nak siapkan...

gigi aku sakit sejak semalam (ker malam sebelum tu? atau sebelum tu lagi?tak ingat...) ari tu aku cek takda gak lubang atau apa. aku rasa penyakit memang minat kat aku la. lepas sembuh satu, satu pulak lagi datang. huh!

Nin dah balik dari kl. dah abis pun degree dia secara official (mengikut cara dia bagitau semalam). ak ah, semalam dia call tanya betul ker aku yg nak kawin. untung ler semalam aku takda mood nak menipu so, aku cakap la akak aku yg nak kawin sebenarnya. "Serius?" dia cakap. Aku tak dengar jelas, "Akak aku la nak kawin, bukan aku." dia cakap lagi "Bukan, serius ker dia nak kawin?" Ye la, mesti la serius nak kawin. dia bukan budak kecik boleh main kawin-kawin lagi (ni aku tak cakap kat dia la). "Ak ah. Serius" . So, dia tanya bila & di mana & dia tanya siapa yg patut dia bawa nanti? Aku cakap bawa ler 'abang' ko. Haha, gelak la pulak bekas awek aku ni. Naper?

Ikut mood, makin hari makin la besar malas aku nak kerja. Sibuk ngan Kanotix pulak sekarang ni (nak belot ngan Slackware ker? hehe... takder la, sesaja jer ni. command pun boleh guna kat Slackware jugak kan? ni kira cari pengalaman dari Kanotix la baru guna kat Slackie. Slackie punya tuts kurang ler...)Semalam dah setup XMail (mail server). Dah run tapi aku saspek ader error sebab dia tak tulis pun "XMail started..." masa aku taip /etc/init.d/xmail start tu. Hermm, nak belek sikit kat putera.com si Oshiri punya tutorial ni. KMail aku pun tak jalan masa nak antar. Dia cakap sendmail ader problem. Betul pulak aku dah tukar sendmail lama guna xmail punya sendmail tu. mejik betul...

Lepas ni aku plan nak susun setup Webmail, pastu buat ftp, pastu proxy atau apa-apa yg berkaitan la. Nanti kalau dah pasang 'Seterimik' baru la setting Firewall atau apa.

Dah, perut aku pulak nak join menyakitkan aku. Woih, dah la woi, aku surrender...

Lapar plak... adei, sarapan tadi pun 2 keping roti jer ngan milo. mak ada kat umah, so makan sedap jer tiap ari :P. Ari ni dah 31, so tinggal 16 ari jer lagi utk hari besar kakak aku tu. Tak sabar... (apsal tak sabar arr? Tak sabar nak jumpa ngan awek ker? Haha...)

Ari ni dan hari sblm-sblm ni, nak concentrate ngan Knoppix ni pulak. Dah pasang kat box aku semalam tapi memang makan memori gila babas. Tak cam faveret aku si Slackie tu. Smooth jer pastu features pun ok. Tapi aku takkan jadi budak yg tak tau untung just padam & reinstall kalau tak dpt setting. Tu kerja budak kecik tu. Aku nak usaha utk tengok sampai mana aku boleh capai. Skrg ni pun tgh buat note dari Putera.com. Ramai otai Linux kat sana & kalau tak cukup lagi boleh gi ittutor.net punya forum.

Pers time aku ingat Good Friday hujan. Biasanya panas menggigit jer. Gi church tadi lepas repair kerja Kak Lily sikit (data key in utk maklumat murid).Dulu, masa kecik-kecik, aku rasa religous sesangat. Tiap kali Good Friday, aku cam rasa gelap jer. Aku biasa rasa benda ni kalau ader org meninggal. Kadang cam alam ni rasa merah, kadang cam rasa hari gerhana. Then, kalau masa mass tu, org, choir, semua nyanyi lagu sedih (tanpa iringan alat muzik cam biasa) rasa betul-betul cam hadiri satu mass for the dead. Ingat lagi masa gi mass my late classmate & friend, Marciano Domingo (God Bless Upon His Soul), org nyanyi lagu latin. Syahdu & memang sedih giler. Masa tu, tak kira laki ker pompuan, islam or christian or chinese or hindu, semua pay their last respect ngan rasa yg melankolik abis.
But, Good Friday is different. Very different. Kalau org lain, yg kebetulan lalu kat luar gereja tadi & nampak perarakan (procession utk Station Of The Cross) mesti diaorang hairan & tanya "Sapa meninggal?". Then, kalau soalan tu kena kat aku, aku sure balas... "My Lord, My Christ, Tuhan aku... Jesus Christ!".Tadi, masih dpt rasa lagi gerhana kematian tu...
Aku dah abis tengok video tutorial utk Linux. Ader la dpt sikit cam setting samba, alias utk command, gabung command cam find & grep utk cari fail, vi editor, bla-bla-bla dan bla... Plan nak up satu linux server tapi kena cari monitor or at least 'kerajinan' utk membuat server tu. Aku plan nak pasang lagi Slackie 9.1 kat box lama tu. Semalam lepak rumah rijal. Jumpa plak CD Eiffel...I'm In Love. Huh, 2 bintang jer aku bagi filem ni (setakat ni ler sebab aku blm abis tengok lagi). Walaupun aku tengok budak pompuan heroin tu (Shandy Aulia) kiut cam anak patung idup, tapi underage ler '(-_-). Aper la direktor dia ni, dah takda pelakon matang sket cam Dian Sast ker kat Indon tu?Punya la byk aku nak komen pasal filem ni (dah bagi 2 bintang jer mestilah byk nak komen) siap tulis dlm notepad aku lagi. Haha, ada bakat jadi pengkritik filem! Ok, ready... go! Das pertama, apsal la direktor ni bagi budak bawah umur tu pegi ciom budak lelaki hero yg poyo tu? Weih, against the law tu! Bukan maksud aku against the law sebab hero tu poyo, tapi tu dah kira underage sex tu. Ni naper? Nak tiru AADC ker ni? Lantas, memberikan aku kesimpulan bahawa budak sekolah menengah kat Indon blh senang-senang nak gi berpeluk cium kat sekolah tanpa kena sebat.Das kedua, byk betul adegan tak blh masuk dlm kepala logik aku. Driver Tita (heroin underage tu la) blh muncul tiba-tiba masa dia terlanggar ngan Adit (hero poyo, botak, kontrol macho tapi ekceli tak macho pun, tak pandai bawak keta, lagak jer lebih) sedangkan aku tengok Tita cam jauh jer dia lari masa nak gi cari hero yg hilang kat airpot tu. Superman ker Suparman driver dia tu? Masa sorang lagi budak pompuan (rival si heroin) call stesen radio utk tujukan lagu (sebenarnya nak sakitkan ati Tita jer, kan?) camana pulak budak tu tau rancangan tu tgh ke udara (on air) masa tu? Dia takda pulak aku tengok pegang walkman atau radio ker tapi boleh pulak jadi 1st caller. DJ tu kakak dia ker?Das kedua, ketiga dan seterusnya aku simpan utk malam ni. Nak tgk jugak camana ending citer tu & tambah kritikan aku. Haha...
